EL PASO, TX (CNN) - What was supposed to be a fun and exciting first day of school turned tragic when a driver accidentally hit and killed a parent with his car and injured three children.
According to the El Paso Independent School District, the incident happened on Monday at around 3 p.m. in front of Tippin Elementary in the west side of town.
The school district says the driver was picking up his grandchildren at the time when he accidentally hit the accelerator instead of the breaks as he was backing up.
The car reversed and hit three kids and the mother who had just picked up her children from school.
Police say the woman was trying to get the driver’s attention and let him know that there were children crossing behind him before he reversed.
The mother died as a result of her injuries and the three children were taken to an area hospital in critical condition.
All three children were seven years-old.
Two of the children who were involved in the accident were related to the woman.
The driver was taken into custody and is expected to face charges.
The school district released a statement saying, “This is a day you never anticipate and are never prepared for. In times such as these, we are grateful for our community support and will lean on each other for strength. We continue to pray for our students and the families involved.”
The school district goes on to say that they will be offering counseling to its students who are affected by the tragic accident.
