Former Zeta Cartel boss sentenced to 30 years in prison

LAREDO, Texas (KGNS) - The former boss for the Zeta Cartel in Nuevo Laredo has been sentenced to 30 years in prison.

Ivan Velasquez-Caballero, aka, 'El Talivan'

Ivan Velasquez-Caballero, who was also known as 'El Talivan' was sentenced to federal prison following his convictions on 47 counts including drug trafficking, kidnapping and money laundering.

Velasquez-Caballero was a plaza boss for Nuevo Laredo in 2004 under the Gulf Cartel and then became one of the leaders of the Zetas' Drug Cartel from 2005 until his arrest by Mexican authorities in August 2012. He plead guilty in Apri of 2014.

During Friday's hearing, the court noted that there was sufficient evidence to show that the Zetas were probably responsible for starting the violence that still plagues Mexico today and that Velasquez-Caballero had some contribution to that.

Velasquez-Caballero is expected to face deportation proceedings following his release from prison.
