LAREDO, TX (KGNS) - A group of 25 Laredo students received a $1,000 scholarship from the GEO organization.
A total of $25,000 was awarded to the recipients on Wednesday morning at Webb County Commissioners Court.
The incentive was meant to help them on their road to college as many of them come from low income families.
School counselors base the aide on their economical needs instead of their grade point average.
The GEO group has been able to hand out $300,000 scholarships in the past 12 years.
Commissioner Wawi Tijerina says, “I know how important it is to get money to continue your education. That should not stop a student from continuing an education, and to continue doing what they like.”
Tijerina encourages all incoming seniors to talk to their counselors to see if they qualify for the scholarship.
