LAREDO, Texas (KGNS) - Every school has a school counselor and this week schools are recognizing counselors who implement comprehensive school counseling programs.
LISD says it prioritizes improving its student-counselor relationship in each campus.
The special week provides recognition for school counselors who implement comprehensive school counseling programs.
Behind the doors of the counseling center at Cigarroa High school, you can find Sandra Esparza.
Esparza has been the guidance counselor for Cigarroa for over ten years.
As counselors all over the nation are recognized, Esparza says their duty goes beyond academic guidance.
Esparza believes that part of their duties is to listen to the students not just when it comes to their academics but any other issues they may be struggling with.
To continue pushing the available support, Laredo Independent School District says it prioritizes improving its student-counselor relationship at each campus.
This year she oversees a little over 300 students, who she says not only visit her office but she makes sure to visit in the classroom by teaching lesson plans too.
Esparza encourages any student to reach out to a counselor because they are there to help in any way.
LISD says each counselors' policy varies, some might require setting up meetings, others welcome walk-ins.
