Medical cannabis helps local teen with epilepsy

LAREDO, TX (KGNS) - A local teen who suffers from epilepsy is the first in Texas to be treated with medical cannabis for his condition.

Victor Becerra

Thirteen-year-old Victor Becerra has been suffering from a severe form of epilepsy called “Lennox-Gastaut Syndrome” since he was only six-years-old.

He has taken several types of medications but would not see any long-lasting changes.

His mother Maria Veloz said she couldn’t stand to see her son go through these conditions any longer, so she started doing research and found a treatment that can help.

Epidiolex is a prescription drug that contains cannabis oil, which is used to treat seizures.

When she found out that Doctor Victor Trevino was a licensed physician that could prescribe Epidiolex, she moved her family to Laredo from Dallas and later started treatment.

Veloz says she’s aware of the misconceptions out there but says this has been a life-changing medication for her son.

Victor is reportedly doing a lot better at school and he’s more active and sleeping better at night.

Veloz encourages anyone who has a child suffering from epilepsy to consult with their doctor about this treatment because she says her son is a true testament that it works.

The mother has created a Facebook page about her son’s journey with the treatment and hopes that people interested learn more about how it has helped.
