LAREDO,Texas(KGNS)- Mayor Pete Saenz speaks about the government shutdown, after visiting with lawmakers in Washington, D.C. last week.
The mayor, a member of the Texas Border Coalition, was on board with the group's decision to take action after the president threatened to shut down the border.
Members wrote a letter to the president explaining how shutting down the border would affect border cities like Laredo.
The coalition also decided to personally take the letter to the capital and meet with other Texas representatives to make their case.
The mayor says a border shutdown will dramatically affect trade.
Ports of entry along our border bring about a million dollars per minute to the trade industry, and 40 to 50 percent of that trade is done through Laredo's port of entry.
