McFarland, USA runner visits Laredo
A legendary runner from the McFarland Cross Country team is using his own personal experiences to inspire fellow athletes.
McFarland USA is based on the true story of underdogs triumphing over tremendous obstacles.
The Disney movie features Kevin Costner as the coach who recognizes the talents of a cross-country team in McFarland, California in the 1980s.
One of the real-life runners Thomas Valles, decided to make a stop in the Gateway City to talk about what an honor it was to be part of such a historical moment.
Valles says back in 1980, it took Coach White eight years to develop a team that went to the state championship in California.
Now Thomas travels across the country to teach others the importance of perseverance and hard work.
Valles says although the movie doesn’t go into full detail about what it was like growing up, it still tells the story about the motivation to succeed.
Valles will be doing a meet and greet with local athletes and fans of the movie during the Border Olympics track and field events.
