LAREDO, Texas (KGNS) - Officials with UISD are hoping they can speed up the construction process for a new elementary school.
The school is scheduled to open August of 2020, but the UISD 2013 Bond Committee wants to move forward and break ground on the new school this year.
The school would be located on Lomas Del Sur and Cuatro Vientos, replacing Salinas Elementary.
Earlier this year, several parents came forward with claims that their children were getting sick as a result of mold found inside the school.
UISD told KGNS that mold had been in fact found on the furniture of two classrooms and they had taken proper measures to clean it out.
However, the district would not confirm if this was the reason for speeding up the construction process.
UISD says they still need the board of trustees’ approval before they can get to work.
A possible vote could come as early as next week if everything goes as plan.
The district would hold the groundbreaking ceremony by next month if it gets approved.
If the board approves the construction of the school, UISD says the new campus would be open by December 2018.
