River drowning numbers down according to Nuevo Laredo officials

NUEVO LAREDO, TAMAULIPAS (KGNS) - Nuevo Laredo officials say their efforts to keep people from drowning trying to cross into the United States is paying off.

Authorities say this year a total of 17 people have died from trying to cross the river.

Although that number seems pretty high, it's much lower than what it was last year.

Officials cite efforts by both the Mexican and US. governments to educate people about the dangers of crossing as a possible reason why the numbers were so low this year.

Law enforcement says they will continue their efforts to reduce the number of people drowning in the river.
