Man who allegedly shot at police said he was "not going to be taken alive"

LAREDO, TX The Laredo Police Department has released more details on the man who allegedly engaged police in a shootout over the weekend.

34-year-old Rene Salas

According to court documents, Rene Salas was involved in a domestic dispute with a woman inside a hotel room Saturday morning.

He then allegedly threatened the woman saying, “If he didn't kill her, he was going to kill himself.”

The documents go on to say when Salas left the hotel room, he allegedly decided to shoot at the officers in order to have officers return fire and end his life.

During the gunfire exchange, one officer was injured; however, the two bullets hit the officer’s protective vest.

Joe Baeza with the Laredo Police Department says, the person who was hit by the bullet but not injured was Sergeant Sergio Mendiola.

Mendiola has been with the department for 20 years.

The other two officers who were involved in the incident were Wesley Paredes who has been with the department for 17 years and Felix Sarmiento who has three years of experience.

The case remains under investigation.

The man who allegedly shot at a Laredo Police officer over the weekend is now facing more charges.

Police say the incident began as a domestic disturbance involving Rene Salas, 34 at a hotel room on the 6500 block of Arena Boulevard.

Salas is accused of assaulting a woman and a child inside the room before reportedly opening fire towards officers.

He is now facing charges on those alleged assaults.

Police say when Salas opened fire, he hit an officer, striking his bulletproof vest.

Salas was found hiding at a nearby dealership at the time of the gunfire exchange.

Police say the case is still under investigation.

An armed man is arrested after responding to police with gunfire.

Laredo Police arrested Rene Salas, 34 in the case.

The incident happened at around 4:30 a.m. on Saturday, July 20th, when officers were called out to a disturbance near the 6500 block of Arena Blvd.

The caller contacted police saying a man was armed with a handgun and making threats.

Officers were able to locate the man at the parking lot of a car dealership.

When police attempted to make contact with the suspect, officers were met with gunfire.

As a result, a police officer was struck and received an impact to his body armor vest.

He was transported to the hospital and was released with no major injuries.

Salas was charged with capital murder of a police officer (criminal attempt) and aggravated assault against a peace officer.
