Police warn homeowners to secure their belongings

LAREDO,Texas(KGNS)- We're just a day away from the first of December, which according to Allstate is the top day for home break-ins in Texas.

What many people view as a safe haven, can sometimes turn into a target for thieves during the holiday season.

The Laredo Police Department describes the trend they see and shares some tips that will keep you from falling victim.

From 2014 to 2017 the Laredo Police Department had 132 total reported claims in the month of December.

Since it's the holiday's Laredo PD stresses the importance of not leaving valuables in your vehicles and not leave empty cardboard boxes in front of your home displaying any electronic you've received.

Allstate recommends ways to avoid being on a thief's target list, which includes locking up even if it's for a short errand and making sure all doors and windows are sealed. Alarm systems are also an excellent way to deter thieves.

Allstate advises not to publicize your plans and be mindful of telling social media friends that you're leaving on vacation.

Laredo PD says from 2017 to 2018 they saw a 22 percent reduction in break-ins at homes and a nine percent reduction in car burglaries.

If you are victim to a home or car burglary the Laredo Police Department advises you to contact them at 795-2800.
