RIO BRAVO, Texas (KGNS) - The people of Rio Bravo are speaking out about the arrest of the town’s mayor.
Mayor Francisco Peña
Mayor Francisco Peña was arrested on federal charges of healthcare fraud and conspiracy to commit money laundering.
Peña is reportedly still being held at the Webb County Jail on no bond.
The mayor is facing a total of four charges in the 11 count indictment.
Peña along with Rodney Mesquias, Henry Mcinnis, and Jose Garza are accused of participating in a healthcare fraud conspiracy that involved over 150 million dollars in Medicare billings for hospice and home health services.
The residents of Rio Bravo came together to ask the Webb County Attorney to remove Peña from office.
Rita Uriba of Rio Bravo says "I would like to see that now that this has happened. Hopefully we can elect another mayor or another woman mayor that can truly do something that no mayor has done."
Former mayors of Rio Bravo say they want to make sure no one takes advantage of their tax dollars.
In the indictment it says Peña would allegedly get paid kickbacks for illegally referring hospice patients.
