Should we say goodbye to plastic straws?

LAREDO, TX (KGNS) - As Starbucks looks to completely phase out the use of plastic straws by 2020, some local businesses are looking to do the same.

A few local restaurants have already started making changes by offering reusable and biodegradable straws or cutting them out altogether.

The U.S. runs through roughly 500 million plastic straws a day.

Out of those millions of straws, only 10 percent are being recycled.

Although the change has received mixed reviews, local business owners and environmentalists continue to strive for green changes.

Maita Fernandez of Lolita’s Bistro says they have started to do away with straws at its establishment.

Recently Seattle was one of the first cities in the United States to ban plastic straws and utensils.
