LAREDO, TX (KGNS) - With September being known as National Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, a local Catholic School is coming together to support a child in his battle against cancer.

Four-year-old Rodrigo Cantu

Four-year-old Rodrigo Cantu was diagnosed with brain cancer when he was just a year old and remained in remission for two years.

Unfortunately a few months ago, Rodrigo’s doctor said they detected another tumor in his brain.

Heartbroken by the news, Rodrigo said his dream of joining his brother at St. Augustine was cut short.

Officials at St. Augustine heard about the news and decided to do what they can to help Rodrigo in his battle.

The school decided to hold several fundraisers to help Rodrigo’s family in their time of need.

Saint Augustine Principal Barbra Zurita says during the month of September, the school will be selling hearts for a dollar and all of the proceeds will go to the Cantu family.

The students have also been doing their part by making get well soon cards that express their thoughts and prayers.

Rodrigo’s mother says a portion of the funds will also be donated to the Foundation of Childhood Cancer.
