Authorities in Harlingen, Texas have arrested the husband of an elementary school teacher hours after he allegedly killed her.

Laurio Maldonado is one of the neighbors that woke up to find out that one of his neighbors had been killed.

The Cameron County Sheriff’s Office believes it all started with a domestic dispute.

On Tuesday after midnight, authorities received a call from the victim’s son saying that his father Alvaro Mata Jr. was trying to kill his mother.

According to sheriff’s when deputies got to the home, 36-year-old Jessica Cortina was found dead with a gunshot wound to the chest.

Thirty-eight-year-old Mata drove away from the scene but was captured by authorities later Tuesday morning.

Maldonado says throughout the years he has lived in the neighborhood, he never thought something like this would happen.

Mata is currently in jail waiting to be formally charged.
