LAREDO, TX (KGNS) - A local viewer brought up a concern over the dangerous conditions workers are under at a construction site on Del Mar Boulevard.
Last week, the Laredo Fire Department held a training on emergency response procedures when someone gets injured inside a trench.
Officials say 100 people die in trenches across the country every year.
The ditches pose a risk since they are very unpredictable.
Typically, when working inside a trench, it’s very important that props are used to support and hold the line ground from caving in.
A viewer contacted us about a trench that looked to be about 10-feet deep with unprotected workers inside.
If the ground were to fall in, the crew would be in potential danger.
The trench is part of a city project but it is being done by a hired contractor.
The city says these conditions are unacceptable and the concern has been addressed with the construction supervisor.
Chief Steve Landin says they immediately sent out their rescue team supervisor to assess the situation and alert them of the safety concerns.
