THOUSAND OAKS, CA (CNN) - A Ventura County Sheriff’s Sergeant was one of the 12 victims who was killed during Wednesday night’s bar shooting in Thousand Oaks, California.
Sergeant Ron Helus was a 29 year law enforcement veteran.
Helus was among the first officers through the door at the Borderline Bar and Grill.
According to reports, Helus was shot multiple times while trying to stop the alleged gunman, Ian Long.
Helus was rushed to the hospital where he was later pronounced dead.
Sheriff Geoff Dean said Helus was getting ready to retire next year.
Helus is described as a hardworking dedicated sheriff’s sergeant who died a hero.
He is survived by his wife and son.
