Laredo Director Discusses Latest Short Film
"You can be whoever you want to be" are words we hear when we grow up, even though this is not always the case.
But one Laredoan proves if you work hard enough, it just might pay off.
"Rana" is a story about a knight who meets a nun about to be burned at the stake. It's a story Jaime Herrera, Jr. had been working on months prior to starting the film.
"There's crafts, there's costuming, you know you got to pay actors, sometimes you have to pay for transportation and all these different things," Herrera said.
From makeup and costuming to casting and location scouting, making his film possible had a bumpy start.
"I didn't know what I was going to do," Herrera said. "I was even considering postponing my film. I knew I wanted to make the film, but would I be able to make it in November of 2016? That was the problem."
Herrera said that a lot of it depended on whether or not he could find a location. Luckily, SAG/AFTRA actor Dave McNutly was able to help him out.
"David was nice enough to take me over there," Herrera said. "I loved the place, and thankfully I found a location."
As for his inspiration....
"A lot of it just comes from me having gone to a Catholic school in Laredo," Herrera said. "When I first moved, and....I don't know, I guess it just left a bad taste in my mouth."
Herrera says he has been struggling with his faith, and you can see this in his film.
For now, Herrera plans on submitting his short film to various film festivals around the country as he continues to work on his next short film.
