LAREDO, Tex. (KGNS) - The City of Laredo is revisiting the idea of increasing bridge tolls, citing rising construction costs and the need for infrastructure expansion at its ports of entry.

Community Concerns

Frequent bridge users, like Humberto Lopez Garcia, are uneasy about the potential hike. “It’s a bad idea. As it is, we don’t have money, and they want to make things more expensive,” Garcia said.

Vanessa Miranda echoed similar concerns, adding,“With the economy as it is, raising fees would not be fair to those who cross often.”

Funding and Expansion Plans

City officials argue the funds are necessary for overdue bridge expansion projects and maintaining the Port Authority Department. Mayor Dr. Victor Treviño highlighted the city’s position as the nation’s busiest port, stating that while the current $3.50 toll fee aligns with others, Laredo’s activity level justifies an increase. “Expansion to our World Trade Bridge and others is critical,” Treviño explained.

Industry Perspective

Port of Entry Advisory Committee Chair Rick Laurel supports the idea but urges careful planning. “We must remain competitive with other ports. Raising fees haphazardly could deter traffic from Laredo,” Laurel warned.

Next Steps

The City Council has forwarded the proposal to the Port of Entry Committee for evaluation. Officials believe this group, composed of the mayor and appointed Laredoans, will back the plan.

City Manager updates indicate that any toll fee increase must be tied to a clear purpose and demonstrate a positive impact on the community.
