OTTAWA COUNTY, Ohio (WTVG/Gray News) - An employee at a water treatment plant in Ohio was found dead inside a water tank, according to officials.

The Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office said deputies were dispatched to the Ottawa County Regional Water Treatment Plant around 6:15 a.m. Monday for reports saying a body had been found.

When deputies arrived, they said they found the body floating face down in a water tank.

Officials said the victim, identified as Jeffrey Kukay, was wearing a safety harness that was attached to a safety line running down the middle of a ladder.

Officials were able to determine Kukay’s identity after retrieving his personal belongings. They said Kukay had been a 20-year employee at the plant.

Deputies said they learned Kukay worked from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. by himself in the facility overnight.

Staff members at the plant noted Kukay had completed a 7 p.m. water sample test, but that was the only test completed during the shift.

Authorities said the tank was drained and recovery efforts were started.

They said there did not appear to be any evidence of foul play.

A boiler advisor was issued for all customers of the water treatment plant due to Kukay’s death.

The advisory is expected to remain in place for up to four days while the investigation continues.
