Person dies being caught by wave and pulled out into ocean, officials say
LINCOLN COUNTY Ore. (KPTV/Gray News) – Authorities in Oregon said a person died after being trapped in an ocean current Sunday afternoon.
According to North Lincoln Fire & Rescue District #1, the victim, who has not been identified, became trapped in a strong current near Siletz Bay in Lincoln County before being pulled out to sea just after 3:30 p.m.
Officials said two jet skis and a drone were launched to begin the search.
The U.S. Coast Guard also sent two lifeboats and a helicopter to aid in the search.
Authorities said the person was found shortly after, but was already deceased.
Fire officials expressed condolences for the family and loved ones of the person who died and urged people to remember sneaker waves can strike without warning, knock people off their feet and drag them into deep and cold water.
“Never turn your back on the ocean,” fire officials said. “If the sand is wet, that means the water has already reached that point. And if someone is swept out, do not go in after them — call 911 immediately and keep eyes on them from shore.”
