LAREDO, Tex. (KGNS) - The future of Laredo’s Flock surveillance cameras is heading to the ballot box, though voters will not see the issue in November.

Laredo City Council approved moving forward with a nonbinding public referendum on whether to keep the surveillance system. A date for the vote has not been set.

Before putting the question to voters, the city plans to hold informational meetings to explain how the Flock cameras work and address ongoing questions about privacy, data handling, and police oversight.

The measure passed with two amendments establishing the community education process.
