Laredo declares emergency after overnight hotel fire

Mayor declares emergency as city holds press conference on overnight blaze

LAREDO, Tex. (KGNS) - Laredo officials are set to hold a press conference at 9 a.m. at the Fire Administration Building, to provide an update on a fire that broke out at a local hotel early Wednesday, October 7, morning.

Firefighters battled a hotel fire off I-35 in Laredo after the blaze was reported after midnight in the 800 block of Garden Street.

Evacuations and injuries

As of 6:30 a.m. Officials said over 100 people were evacuated from the hotel.

Seven people were transported to local hospitals for treatment of smoke inhalation, according to city officials

As of 7:20 a.m., Mayor Dr. Victor Trevino said three people are being treated at Doctors Hospital and four are being treated at Laredo Medical Center.

Mayor declares emergency

Mayor Dr. Victor Trevino said a declaration of emergency is currently active as of 6:50 a.m.

The mayor is expected to address how wide the evacuation clearance area will be.

Road closures

Streets surrounding the hotel have also been closed due to potential structure dangers, and as the investigation continues.

Officials say the following streets will be closed throughout the day:

  • Constantinople Street
  • Garden Street
  • San Bernardo Avenue
  • Frontage Road off I-35

LISD response

Laredo Independent School District officials said LISD will continue on normal schedule. LISD police will assist with traffic in the area near the hotel.
