Laredo, Nuevo León establish MOU to enhance access to medical care
LAREDO, Tex. (KGNS) - A new initiative could lead to increased access to medical care in Laredo.
The City of Laredo recently signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the Mexican state of Nuevo León after the passage of House Bill 2038, which allows foreign doctors to practice in Texas communities facing medical shortages.
Laredo Mayor Dr. Victor Trevino states that the law permits doctors to see patients with a provisional license, which enhances service availability and improves access to care.
“Basically, this serves our community. We’ve been medically underserved for decades. Yes, people can travel to Mexico for medical services, but not everybody wants to go there or is able to go there. So, this allows them to provide these services in our communities. The advantage of this is that mostly everybody’s bilingual here, and the culture’s already basically the same on both sides of the border,” Trevino said.
He adds that they are also aiming to sign an agreement with the state of Tamaulipas.
