Laredo Council approves $8.7M Plaza Theatre restoration despite operational concerns
LAREDO, Tex. (KGNS) - On Wednesday, Feb. 11, the Laredo City Council voted to move forward with an $8.7 million Plaza Theatre restoration, despite concerns about how the historic venue will actually operate.
The original plan included an expansion costing around $17 million. City leaders ordered engineers to redesign the project to fit the $8.7 million budget.
The new plan restores the theatre to its original design with no expansion. Some city officials wanted the project to move forward after years of discussion, while others still had questions about how the theatre would operate.
“I don’t feel like a lot of thought has gone into it, and it’s just sort of going back and forth. Spending this amount of money and not knowing the operations and how to make it feasible when we’ve invested the money, concerns me,” said Alyssa Cigarroa, District 8 Council Member.
The council approved the project despite lingering questions about operations.
