Webb County early voting turnout up 20%, official says
Elections administrator says voting patterns are shifting as site changes take effect
LAREDO, Tex. (KGNS) - The first week of early voting is wrapping up, with some trends beginning to emerge.
Webb County Elections Administrator Jose Luis Castillo said voter interest and participation are up in this year’s races.
Compared to the 2022 governor’s race, Castillo reported a 20% increase in voter turnout and participation.
With one popular voting site no longer available, Castillo said voting patterns are changing this election cycle.
“I’ve looked at the numbers four years ago at LMC as of the present, and we are showing that there is higher participation at the rehab than at LMC,” Castillo said. “I’m looking at it: once we opened the countywide polling on Election Day, LMC used to be elected on the top two. It kind of dropped, and I’m thinking people find it more convenient to vote on Election Day, where you can vote anywhere. You’re not restricted to your precinct.”
For the remainder of early voting, Castillo expects 40,000 ballots cast, with another 30,000 votes projected on Election Day.
