LAREDO, Tex. (KGNS) - Texas Department of Public Safety troopers are out in full force for “Operation C.A.R.E.” Highway patrols are targeting dangerous drivers throughout Laredo for the holiday weekend.

State officials say road safety actually starts inside local establishments.

Sgt. Erick Estrada with the Texas Department of Public Safety said the agency is working with the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission during the operation.

“During these operations, we also work with TABC... and one of the things that we are seeing is that some of the local bars, sometimes they give out more alcohol than they’re supposed to... to not give an excess amount of alcohol to these users,” Estrada said.

Estrada said troopers continue to see people choose to drink and drive.

“We continue, unfortunately, seeing people make the decision to drink and drive. Our recommendation is if you’re going to be participating and partaking in the use of alcohol, please do not get behind the wheel. Use a friend who is sober,” Estrada said.

State troopers say increased roadway patrols will remain active through Monday night.
