Grass fire breaks out in south Laredo after car catches fire
LAREDO, Tex. (KGNS) - A parked car caught fire off South Highway 83 around 10 a.m., sparking a dry grass blaze that spread quickly under extreme heat and high winds, according to Laredo Fire Department officials.
The flames triggered a chain reaction, engulfing another nearby car and a parked food truck on the property.
A witness who was steps away as the situation unfolded described a frantic rush to evacuate as flames jumped from vehicle to vehicle.
“...they had to get everyone out; they evacuated all the cars that are here too,” the witness said.
The witness said the fire spread rapidly from truck to truck and burned for two hours before crews could put it out.
“That truck right there spread the fire to the other truck, and it’s spreading rapidly; all the grass is burning. It has been burning for two hours here and they haven’t been able to put it out,” the witness said.
Fire crews eventually got the fire under control after hours of battling the blaze. With high winds and triple-digit temperatures, firefighters kept a truck on scene to monitor the brush for potential hot spots.
The official cause of the fire remains unknown.
