United Way to host 80s cover band for fundraiser

LAREDO, Tex. (KGNS) - United Way is preparing for the Spazmatics concert, one of its largest fundraising events, at the barn near Casablanca Road, close to the golf course.

Dr. Daniel De La Miyar, United Way’s incoming president, discussed the event.

The concert will include a silent auction and prizes, including a 1980s-themed best costume contest. De La Miyar said tickets are available for purchase at the United Way office. Tables of 10 are available for $1,500.

De La Miyar said 97 cents of every dollar donated stays in the community. United Way fundraises throughout the year to reach its $1 million goal.

According to De La Miyar, United Way distributes donations among 20 agencies the organization has vetted.

He said the process includes an application, facility checks, interviews with each organization’s president and executive director and a review of financials. Allocations are then dispersed based on the organizations’ needs.

Organizations that receive funding include the Boys and Girls Club, animal shelters, the Salvation Army, Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts.
