LAREDO, Tex. (KGNS) - United ISD is hosting “Dance for a Cure,” a Zumba fundraiser benefiting Smiles From Heaven, as part of Childhood Cancer Awareness Month in September.

Lorena Martinez with UISD said the event is the district’s first Zumba fundraiser for the organization, which she said helps children and families in Laredo and South Texas battling childhood cancer.

“We really wanted to do something different,” Martinez said. “We always have our pin-up campaign where we raise funds for them and all that, but this time we said let’s do something extra, something fun where the community can get involved and at the same time contribute to this wonderful cause.”

The one-hour Zumba class will be held at United Middle School. Registration costs $15 online before Sept. 16 or $20 at the door.

Martinez said the district is still seeking sponsors who want to promote their businesses at tables during the event.

Participants can register online, at the UISD offices at 201 Lindenwood from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., or pay on-site the day of the event. The event is open to ages 10 and up, and Martinez said children are encouraged to attend with their families.

“You have to have zero experience,” Martinez said. “It’s just for fun. It’s not anything formal. You don’t have to be a dancer or know how to move. The whole point is to move your body to, you know, just sweat it all out.”

Martinez said the class will feature a mix of music, including 80s songs, and will be led by a certified Zumba instructor who is also a UISD employee.

Martinez said attendees are encouraged to wear yellow or gold in support of Childhood Cancer Awareness Month.

“They’re a great partner to the district and to the Laredo community,” Martinez said of Smiles From Heaven. “They’ve helped so many families out here, including some of our UISD families. So we want to pay it forward and do it in a fun way.”
