United ISD parents protest potential school closures
Finely Elementary among five campuses facing closure or consolidation due to budget deficit
LAREDO, Tex. (KGNS) - Parents and children from Finely Elementary gathered outside the campus to protest the school’s potential closure, holding signs that read “Finely Our children or School” and “Save Our School.”
Nearly a dozen parents asked board members to reconsider their decision regarding Finely Elementary, which is one of five schools that could close or consolidate before the 2026-27 school year begins.
The other schools facing potential closure or consolidation include Matias de Llano, Dr. Henry Cuellar, Amparo Gutiérrez and Kennedy-Zapata elementary schools.
The potential closures come as United ISD faces a multimillion-dollar deficit, the voucher program and decreased enrollment.
The board will hold a workshop Wednesday, Feb. 11, at 6 p.m. in the Student Activity Center to discuss budget-saving measures. Anyone wanting to participate in the public comment session must arrive 10 minutes before the workshop starts to sign up.
The United ISD Board of Trustees will make a decision after additional meetings and further discussions.
