Laredo Plaza Theatre renovation moving forward with roof work nearly complete

LAREDO, Tex. (KGNS) - Laredo’s historic Plaza Theatre is on track to become a modern multi-purpose center. Engineers updated city council on the renovation’s progress on Monday.

Phase one, the roof replacement, is nearly done. Engineers expect it to wrap up in June.

Phase 2, exterior repairs and upgrades, is already underway. It’s only 10% complete, but engineers expect to finish by November.

“We did the roof first to seal the roof to prevent further leaks and infiltration,” said Eliud De Los Santos, engineering department director for the city of Laredo. “Phase two is to seal the outside of the building to prevent any water from coming through the inside.”

Phase three calls for interior renovations to modernize and transform the theatre into a multi-purpose center. The design plan is expected to be finalized this month.

De Los Santos said the interior work alone could take 12 to 15 months.
